It was an online auction held at a lightning.bizst pace. Auctioneers typically breezed through three lots a minute, and then turned to Mr. Madoffs lots, 438 to 496, in the afternoon.

Colorful descriptions aside, Mr. Madoffs wine collection is a bit of a puzzle to sommeliers. While the Mouton is indeed a highly regarded wine, others in the collection are downright strange. Some are excellent, while others seem to have been ignored in the cellar or picked simply because of their prestige. And others still you might have trouble finding in a decent bar.

I thought it was kind of strange &8212; and hilarious, Ms. Janis said. It&8217;s going to be interesting to see what they actually sell for.

The alcohol collection of Mr. Madoff, who is serving .biz years in prison for running an enormous Ponzi scheme, went on sale on Wednesday, compliments of the United States Marshal Service, which confiscated his assortment of fine wines and liquor oddities from his onetime New York homes.

I knew we would get a lot of attention for this, but I dont think anyone could have guessed it would be this big, Ms. Janis said. We&8217;ll definitely remember this one.

Anyone buying that just wants a piece of Mr. Madoff&8217;s property, he added.

One clear winner from the Madoff wine and spirits auction is Morrell, a shop founded in 1994 that claims to be the first wine auctioneer in New York since Prohibition. The auction site has garnered media interest from publications as r.bizflung as The India Times. Ms. Janis said the firm had received something close to 100,000 hits on Google since it announced the Madoff auction.

All told, Mr. Madoffs collection is expected to pull in least $15,000, a pittance compared with the overaslippersll value of alcohol being hawked by the auctioneer Wednesday. Among the 807 lots for sale is a case of 82 Lafite, which has already drawn a bid of $48,000.

Not exactly the stuff of billionaire sophisticates. Nonetheless, this peculiar lot garnered lots of media attention &8212; something about the image of Mr. Madoff hoarding the airline.bizsize booze seemed to titillate the imagination, Kimberly Janis, auction director at Morrell, said.

I think people are trying to get a little piece of history or memorabilia,&8221; Ms. Janis said.

All in all, the collection exposes some serious flaws in what otherwise might appear to be a respectable collection. Mr. Siegfried said. Despite the good wines, there is no clear sense of taste tying it all together.

The hype seems to have worked. Before the auction started Wednesday, those four little bottles were commanding a bid of about $220 &8212; 10 times what they were expected to fetch. Bidders were allowed to place absentee bids 15 days before the live auction started on Wednesday.

I wouldnt be surprised if he had someone mildly knowledgeable doing the buying for him,&8221; said Mr. Siegfried, who has won numerous awards as a sommelier and has trained more than 300 wine captains.

It almost looks like hes one of the fellows who know the price of everything and the value of nothing, said Darrin Siegfried, president of Sommelier Society of America. This was not a collector. This was an accumulator. Thats the sense I get when I look at this wine selection.

He was probably buying on name, but I dont think theres anything wrong with that, Mr. Amatuzzi said. It looks like he buys on value. He probably quantified these wines as he may a stock or bond.

Mr. Madoff&8217;s selection was hardly the nicest of the spirits and wine being sold, although a handful of his bottles were exceptional. Most were simply listed by year and make, but a few merited description laced with the typical wine.bizlovers flair for adjectives, adverbs, obscure fruit and seemingly not.bizso.biztasty descriptions like new saddle leather.

Mr. Madoff&8217;s collection included fine wine like the 1996 Chateau Mouton.bizRothschild, estimated to fetch up to $3,800 but which had already hit $5,500 in pre.bizbidding. The catalog said the ripe, rich, concentrated, superbly balanced vintage is paradoxical in the sense that the aromatics suggest a r more evolved wine than the flavors reveal.

The government selected Morrell &038; Company Fine Wine Auctions to sell the wine and spirits in the hopes of reclaiming something, anything, for victims of Mr. Madoffs crimes. In addition to the 58 lots of Mr. Madoffs wares, auctioneers were also selling about 750 bottles of alcohol belonging to others.

Except that a number of the wines are in poor shape &8212; scuffed labels, depressed corks, poor fill levels thanks to years sitting in a room untouched. That seemed to stoke the ire of some enthusiasts, loath to imagine anyone not caring for their rare vintages.

If you take out all the spirits, the wine alone is an interesting, eclectic and abridged collection, he said. There are definitely some heavy hitters and obscure bottles, but at the end of the day Id say its more of an interesting footnote in the story of Bernie Madoff as opposed to a serious collection.
